Here is what you should know when taking a holiday to the island of Mallorca. It is part of the Balearic Islands and is located just off the eastern side of Spain. It is a popular tourist destination with a mix of mountains, beaches, bays and lakes and has a temperate climate.

The island is popular among European tourists and its temperate climate has visitors coming all year around. It has mountains, lakes, bays and beaches including the popular Coves del Draco. The caves, which mean Dragon Caves, have stalactite formations and a guided tour that culminates into a gondolier tour on Lake Martel.

The Serra de Tramuntana Mountains runs southwest by northeast and forms a back bone ridge to Mallorca. Its highest peak elevates at 4,741 feet and is the highest point of the Balearic Island range. Other attractions include beaches and lakes as well as a variety of nightlife and entertainment. These attractions are located throughout the island in each of the population centers. There is also a casino, the Casino del Mallorca, located in Palma.

A population of approximately 800,000 living on 3,600 square kilometers inhabits the island. Half of the residents of Mallorca live in the city of Palma, which is the capital of the Balearic Islands. The residents of the island are bilingual, speaking their native Catalan and Spanish. They also speak German, English and other languages. The majority of visitors who come to Mallorca come from Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The island of Mallorca is ancient and was governed by the Byzantines, Romans and Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. Tourism is the main industry in Mallorca and economic mainstay. It grew from half a million visitors in the 1950s to over 22 million in 2008. Temperatures are in the high 80 degrees from June-September (or mid 20 degrees Celsius). Winter lows are around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 degrees Celsius and it stays relatively mild.
